Sometimes we see a terrifying side of the just God. Even in the New Testament writers warned “Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade men, but we are made manifest to God; and I hope that we are made manifest also in your consciences” (2Co 5:11). “It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (He 10:31). This just side of God must punish evil and wickedness…”The LORD is slow to anger and great in power, and the LORD will by no means clear the guilty” (Nahum 1:3).
A sobering view of how God deals with those given over to sin is found in Genesis 19. The people of Sodom, Gomorrah, and the cities on the plains were wiped out due to their wickedness. But do you realize the reason for such action from God? It is because they reject God’s mercy and kindness and love the wickedness in this world. Notice the warning from Moses in Deut 29:24-28
““All the nations will say, ‘Why has the LORD done thus to this land? Why this great outburst of anger?’ 25 “Then men will say, ‘Because they forsook the covenant of the LORD, the God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them out of the land of Egypt. 26 ‘They went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods whom they have not known and whom He had not allotted to them. 27 ‘Therefore, the anger of the LORD burned against that land, to bring upon it every curse which is written in this book; 28 and the LORD uprooted them from their land in anger, and in fury, and in great wrath, and cast them into another land, as it is this day.’”
A stern warning for all who depart from the righteousness of God and cleave to the horrible sin sick world. There is no sadder words than saying someone has turned their back on the only one who truly loves them and wants them in heaven. Please, don’t harden your heart against the loving God who sent Jesus to save you.
