Quick To Listen, Slow To Speak

Taming the Tongue is always hard. If we could and would always stop and think before we speak we would avoid sin and the myriad of problems that come with it.

These are some of the problems of speaking too quickly…

  1. Swearing
  2. False Accusation
  3. Broken relationships
  4. Being worldly instead of Christ-like
  5. Brutishness
  6. Rash promises
  7. Being Foolish

If there were ever a motto we should adopt it would be speak less listen more. Remember the wiseman wrote “a fool’s voice is known by a multitude of words” (Ecc. 5:3). One of the saddest accounts recorded in Scripture is Jeptha’s rash vow (Judges 11).

Why is it so hard to be quiet? Why do we feel that our opinions and advice are always better than those of other’s, therefore must be heard?

There are some words that ought to always spring from our lips that will always bring glory to God and help to others.

  1. Teaching others about Jesus.
  2. Saying “I am sorry.”
  3. Saying “I love you.”
