I’m doing some study on the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet. It is fascinating to read that “aleph” with its three parts can be used to illustrate the Gospel message.
It’s profound that Jesus is “aleph tav” in the Old Testament and “alpha omega” in the New Testament. He is first, last and everything in between. Our letter “a” began as a hieroglyph that was an ox head. That pictograph stood for strength and power. We know that first place goes to the strongest and best. Jesus was the power and creative force in creation. Remember God spoke, He said let there be… and from nothing came everything by the power of the Word (Genesis 1 and 2; John 1:1; Hebrews 1:1-3).
All things start with Jesus the aleph. Without Him nothing would be created (John 1:3). The strong one who introduced Himself to Moses as “I AM that I AM” is the same Lord Jesus the pre-incarnate Word who was with God and was God (John 8:58).
The aleph is a breath sound like all the letters of Jehova in Hebrew. Interesting that to say God’s name we must breath in and out. Without breath we die. Without Jesus we die. All of Scripture is “breathed out by God” (1 Timothy 3:16). The Word (Jesus), sent the Spirit to guide the writers of Scripture to ALL truth (John 16:30; 1 Peter 1:21). The word for spirit shares the root word from which we get our words wind and breath. So in the Word of God we have life (John 6:63). You will certainly die spiritually if you don’t have the Word of God. You can no more live without God’s Word than can you without the breath He gives you.
Aleph is such a simple little thing. So simple that it is one of the first things we teach children. However, upon closer look we find many wonders of our Father God, The Word and Holy Spirit.
The Gospel is simple, not difficult for even youngsters to understand. Yet, it is the focus and effort of the Great God of the universe. God mapped it out from before creation. God brought Jesus and His redemption through history, weaving His plan through the ages so that all men everywhere could be saved. It boggles the mind how intricately laid were the plans. But, we can know the truth and be set free from sin. You see God made it as easy as ABC.
