Psalm 19:14 (ESV) 14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.
Ephesians 4:29 (ESV) 29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
It seems that profanity, gutter speaking, dirty words, cussing or whatever you want to call it, has become mainstream, even in “polite society” and among those who profess to be followers of the Lord Jesus Christ. It seems the ugliest words are not held back from any conversation in our modern culture. My granny would have made us wash our mouths out with soap if we used any of these words or even euphemisms or bywords in their place.
The way we talk speaks volumes about what kind of persons we are. It reveals intelligence or lack thereof, it can tell where we are from and it expresses the level of our sincerity. When we use profanity it certainly discloses how holy or unholy, godly or ungodly we are. Our words tell the world whether we are set God’s service.
The sincere followers of Jesus use their words to build up, encourage and teach the Gospel to others. They just don’t have a place in their hearts for course and profane talking. Dirty jokes, gossip and worldly words reveal that a person has a greater interest in sin and sinning than in spiritual activities and holy living.
Certain vile words and gutter subjects used to never be spoken in public. Things have changed! Music lyrics use some of the most blatantly unacceptable words and topics imaginable. Society wholeheartedly applauds and awards those who use them. Cardi B recently received top accolades for her profane song WAP. In that song she uses just about every imaginable gross way to describe her illicit sexual desire and her private parts. Sadly, our little girls listen to this filth and want to imitate the dancing, sing the ugly lyrics and dress like they place no value on their body in the sight of God or men. Truly, we are robbing the innocence of these little ones with the constant barrage of ungodly words.
We ought to guard our hearts and the hearts of our children from hearing such communications. Our spouses and children should never hear cursing, dirty jokes, hateful speech and such like from us. Remember Paul’s words to the Corinthians who were living in a very similar culture as ours.
2 Corinthians 7:1 (ESV) Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God.
It truly comes down to being holy like our God is holy. Learn to love the honest, lovely and high calling of the words of the Bible.
